Federal workers at risk in Kansas City as shutdown looms

Michele McNally is the recording secretary for the American Federation of government Employees. She has worked with the Department of Labor for 28 years. McNally said shutdowns are almost imbedded in her line of work. “I’ve been through two actually shutdowns before this one, but annually we go through this and sometimes it goes down to the brink and we are sure we are not coming back the next day and then something magical happens,” McNally said. Imelda Avila-Thomas and her husband, who both work for the federal government, suffered a "double whammy" when the government shut down, dropping the household from two incomes to none, she said. Avila-Thomas, 43, president of union local American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) 2139 and an employee at the Department of Labor, said she stopped hiring a tutor for her 12-year-old daughter, who has dyslexia, while making plans for a garage sale to sell off some possessions. “My routine is to go to work and, you know, drop Saddie (daughter) off on the way, that’s my routine, and that’s been taken from me,” Suchman said. National Memoranda of Understanding

  • This MOU concerns the proposed changes by the Employee Benefits Security Administration to the following: revisions to the HIPAA check sheet; new Affordable Care Act (ACA) check sheet; and the Investigator Productivity Schedule (IPS).
  • This MOU concerns the agreement between DOL and the NCFLL regarding  the Employee Benefits Security Administration EBSA implementation of the cusotmer relations management--Technical Assistance and Inquiry System (CRM-TAIS).
  • EBSA Badge MOU between US DOL and NCFLL-AFGE--Parties agree to the following:
  1. Investigators/auditors may use their discretion when deciding to display their badge along with their credentials unless investigative circumstance in the field require their use.
  2. EBSA will require and provide face-to-face training to investigators prior to the issuance of badges.
  3. EBSA investigators may request that their badges be retired and be kept by the Investigator as a momento of honorable service to the Department and EBSA.
  4. EBSA shall retire the Investigator's badge at no cost to the investigator.
